How do I request the use of a photo?

The best way to request a photo is to use the stock photo order form, which makes it easy to enter all of the information needed to place an order.

If you prefer not to use the stock photo order form, then you can send an email to me at this address:

(note:  to cut down on junk email, this email address is actually an image - it can't be copied and pasted, it has to be manually typed in)

How much do the photos cost?

It's not possible to provide a price for the stock photographs on the website because there are so many of them and they're priced using a complex formula with many variables.   The questions on the stock photo order form provides the information needed to determine the appropriate price, so if all of the information is provided then you should quickly receive a response with a fixed price.

What do all of the terms in the stock order form mean?

print run

The print run is simply the number of books, magazines or other type of publication which will be printed.   If you want to print 5,000 books then the size of the print run is 5,000; if you want to print a single billboard then set the print run to 1.

exclusivity

There are several types of exclusivity:

  1. "non-exclusive" means that after licensing the photo to you I can license the photo to anyone else who requests it.   This is the most common arrangement, because it is the cheapest.
  2. "geo-temporal" means that geographical and temporal limits are placed on the photo rights.   For instance, you might license exclusive rights to the photo within North America for a period of two years.   As already discussed, the price would depend on the economic significance of the area and the period of time covered.
  3. "geographical" means that you pay to use the photo within a certain geographical area such as Europe, and I cannot license the photo to anyone ever again to use it in that area.   The price increases in proportion to the economic significance of the area - it's relatively cheap to license a photo for use in obscure regions such as Mongolia, but much more expensive to license a photo for use in North America.
  4. "exclusive" means that you buy the rights to the photo and I can never license the photo to anyone ever again.   This is very rarely done, because it is very expensive, since I lose any ability to ever make money from the photo again.  However, a company might choose to do this if they want to use the image for an advertising campaign and they don't want the same image to appear anywhere else.

number of uses

The "number of uses" of a photo means how many products you want to use it in.   The most common choice is "single use", which means that you can use it in a book or other product and nothing else.   If you want to use it in more than one product, for instance, two different magazines, two issues of the same magazine, or a magazine and a billboard, then you need to choose "multiple use" (see instructions below for ordering for multiple uses).
